What is it with the Aussies? Over the years, I’ve been impressed with Australian Culture and Design, then suddenly this summer, that seems so misdirected. Apparently Australia has it’s own Snookie. They, and we, would have been better off if we simply exported our Snookie.
But it’s restaurant design that really seems to be swirling the bowl in the wrong direction.
Melbourne architect Pascale Gomes-McNabb worked with chef Chui Lee Luk on the “design” of Claude’s, a 36-year-old restaurant in Sydney. Working, or should I say ‘cheffing’ in Sydney since 2004, Luk specializes in Asian and French plates.
I have to assume the food sucks. The space is hideous.
If you want to see more, you probably like train wrecks, chase ambulances. and you’ll also click this link. Protect your eyes. Have the bleach standing buy.
We’ll go back to finding good design, but remember, contrast is important.
Amazingly depressing for the country that brought us the Sydney Opera House which houses the Opera Bar (seen left), amongst other nicely designed hospitality spaces, The National Gallery of Victoria, a unique surf culture, Nicole Kidman, Errol Flynn, and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Just to mention a few examples of great Australian exports.
