Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Modernism?
I think we have made the point that we are generally Modernists. We like clean lines, elegance, drama and everyone and everything should have good lighting. We hope that defines our work.
Nonetheless I am also a big fan of Steampunk and Cyberpunk.
At its root, my enthusiasm for modernism has to do with a vision for the future.I don’t see myself as a HUGE Sci Fi fan, but there are some authors, films, television programs and comics that I am drawn towards. Usually for conflicting reasons, which I hope to layout and illustrate over several posts. This is after all a visual blog about visual things. Unless Kathleen is Gastronauting.
I have ruminated a bit on how as a society our architecture has moved away from the futuristic, edgy and risky; Modernism, Mid-Century Modern, towards more comfortable and traditional styles; Neo-Victorian and Neo-Craftsman amongst them. I still want my George Jetson Car and Pan-Am flight to the Moon. I do like my Modernism to have a really positive spin. But, given the choice between bland or dark, I’ll take a dark vision of the future. Perhaps that is what draws me to Steampunk? I see Neo-Victorian architecture as bland.
Design is more than architecture, that should mean there will be lots of illustration opportunities.
Your thoughts are welcome.
