Times Square at Night 1957
March 30, 2012
As usual, Kirsten Hively, of Project Neon fame, posts a link to feed my signage fetish. This silent 16mm home movie footage of Times Square at Night was shot in 1957. JohnMeyer77 posted this on his You Tube channel. From his description: I used motion stabilization software to remove the shake from the hand-held footage. This [...]

UltraModern Roadside Architecture
August 27, 2010
In the 1950’s, the future was as bright as the SoCal sun. We were living in a post war prosperity, the dawn of the space age and tremendous advances in technology fueled our imaginations of what tomorrow would bring. Designers, architects and engineers boldly explored new materials and processes and were released from the constraints [...]

20 Years of Photoshopping
February 19, 2010
I haven’t been using Photoshop for 20 years, but close. My first version was 2.0. My friend Chris Klug suggested that Photosop and (then) Fractal Design Painter (now Corel Painter) would change the way I make art. He was right, as usual. Undo with an airbrush is an unbelievable technical advance. Of course, that does [...]

Design Within Reach: Mad Neon Sign Love
January 27, 2010
From Design Within Reach Design Notes: Neon is a noble gas, and that’s not a reference to Prince Charles and baked beans. Rather, the term refers to an odorless, colorless, monatomic gas that has a low chemical reactivity. When a high-voltage current is run through a glass tube filled with neon (or argon or phosphor), [...]

Is this the last bit of charm left in Hoboken?
October 6, 2009
The WordPress thumbnail options are a bit limited, hate the application’s forced cropping. Nonetheless, that is not the point of this post. We had the occasion to spend some time in Hoboken Sunday. While we both have fond memories of Hoboken, its charm and potential, this visit was quite the downer. Empty storefronts are always [...]

Neon at Odd Angles
October 4, 2009
I like to twist my camera when I shoot, even if it is just my phone camera. This is a simple shot of the Marquee on the theatre where I designed “Another Man’s Poison” this past summer. Amazing that my phone has a 3Mp camera, if only it had a decent lens and exposure control. [...]

Decals and Vectorworks 2010
September 14, 2009
I won’t say this is a masterpiece, but it was done quickly to illustrate a concept and it uses a new featire in Renderworks 2010 that I have been waiting for, waiting for a very long time. I have been using Vectorworks as a modeler for some years. Before Renderworks was added to the suite, [...]

A visit to MoMA will be in order
July 13, 2009
Not exactly sure how I feel about this work. I guees I will have to go and see for myself in real life. Pictures just don’t do it. I have selected one that I find exciting to use here, but there were some questionable objects… I’ll let MoMa speak for themselves: MoMA PRESENTS THE FIRST [...]

What is moderism?
July 11, 2009
An article on the LA Times website today raised this interesting question. There are related articles on modern retailing, you can look for them if you like. The LA Times (THE Times would be the New York one), provides a bit of basic history and philosophy. They make a basic connection between Moderism and sustainibility, [...]

Industrial Design – Henry Drefuss
June 8, 2009
Here at KLAD, we often live and work in a world of imagination. Our theatrical designs work in concert with the other production elements to tell a story. Our work does not, however, spring soley from our imaginations. Our designs are a result of careful planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research [...]

On The Road Beijing – Subway
May 28, 2009
In my initial post on Beijing, I wrote about our search for the elusive (to me, born without an internal compass) Peking Duck. Today, I’ll take you along with my friend Maureen as I recount our adventure on the Beijing Subway. Maureen and I landed in Beijing as the city was frantically finishing buildings and [...]

Shopping DC – Secondi
May 21, 2009
This is totally a chick post!!! Whenever I am in Washington DC, or a near metro station outside of DC, I try to get to one of my favorite designer consignment shops, Secondi. I’ve been consignment shopping for years, and even opened my own consignment shop in Montclair. My adventures with my shop are fodder [...]

Cheap cameras and neon signs 2
May 6, 2009
This was definitely taken with the Palm camera attachment. Somewhere in the West Village. Great inspiration for a film location or the age old reminder to always get some neon into every set design. Or at least some RBG LED’s. Have to love that saturated color. Tweet

KLAD Works – Shop Visit
April 29, 2009
Today KLAD and assistant Matt went on a field trip to Gotham Scenic Studios to check on the progress of work. One set we are having built will be installed next week. We needed to make a last check and give notes. For every set we build, we visit the shops numerous times to [...]

Daily Inspiration
April 23, 2009
We look for inspiration every day. For a long time this was simply through The New York Times daily delivery, we added other newspapers, but have gone completely online. Yes, The Times site is still one source, but now we have access to many news sources and really targeted information through a slew of other blogs. Many [...]

Pens, Pens, Pencils
April 15, 2009
We both love fine writing instruments. Fountain pens, pencils, ball point pens, roller balls, the works. And we love the Fountain Pen Hospital in New York City. Especially during their semi-annual Pen Expo. Great values and representatives of all the major manufacturers. While the expert staff has a huge knowledge base, the manufacturer reps bring another level of expertise.

Who is Oscar Niemeyer?
April 14, 2009
I remember learning abut Brasília in grade school. I didn’t know what design was. I didn’t know anything about architecture. I did know what I liked and I liked Brasília. I loved the buildings and the open spaces. I loved the shapes. I loved the modern, clean crisp view of an optimistic future.
I loved the idea of an old country getting a fresh start by building a 20th century capitol. I love Washington DC. Always have. The Washington architecture — not so much.
I don’t recall when I actually learned who Oscar Niemeyer is, but I do know that I flashed back when I learned he designed Brasília.

From PAAS to Pysansky
April 10, 2009
I used to love coloring Easter eggs. Mixing the PAAS Easter egg dye with water and white vinegar, then slowly lowering a hard boiled egg into the dye cup and letting the egg soak for as long as possible, so that the egg was saturated with color. Sometimes I would have all the colors going, [...]
