A Great Way to Learn Vectorworks
March 28, 2013
A Great Way to Learn Vectorworks This is shameless self promotion, but I wouldn’t do that if I didn’t think it would help people. Last Week, Nemetschek Vectorworks announced the publication of the second edition of my book:Entertainment Design; Scenic, Lighting and Sound, with Vectorworks Spotlight 2013. Second Edition. This volume is about 40 pages longer than [...]

Creating Textures for a Vectorworks Easter Egg
March 23, 2012
This is the third of three posts describing creating a scene and lighting design for an Easter Egg using Vectorworks. I guess it’s more a prop design, but it’s just an excuse to have some fun and maybe learn a few things along the way. This is also a great illustration of how easy it [...]

A Vectorworks Valentine—Designing Scenery in 3D
February 14, 2012
What follows is an excerpt from my new book; Entertainment and Lighting Design with Vectorworks Spotlight. Any production of Romeo and Juliet actually requires very little in the way of scenery and staging. It does require some pretty good acting, but that’s not our focus here. Basically for the action of the play.. a Balcony [...]

A good read…
July 4, 2011
The New York Times used to publish this every July Fourth. They may still. We no longer read the hard copy of The Times, but we do think this is a worthwhile read. At lest once a year. IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When [...]

Broadway Vampire–Black Friday Shopping Suggestion
November 23, 2010
I met Uke Jackson last year at about this time at producer Ken Davenport’s annual holiday party. A great event, with great people. Uke, Kathleen and I struck up a longish distance friendship via our blogs and Facebook. I have been interested in his writing since we met and his novel Broadway Vampire seemed to [...]

Remarkable Renderworks; Remarkable! #Vectorworks
May 17, 2010
Daniel Jansenson’s new book Remarkable Renderworks from what should clearly now be dubbed Nemetschek Press is a terrific resource. Like any publication, there is a bit of the bad to go along with the good. Let’s start with the bad. The leading between the first and second items in the table of contents seems off. [...]

Conceptualization–The Foundation of Design
April 26, 2010
Although I saw a great many terrific things at the ETC; portfolios, Shadyside, the space and projects, I was there to lecture. If I have the schedule correctly, the ETC invites a prominent speaker to visit each week and address the students on Wednesday afternoons. The sessions are scheduled for two hours including Q&A. In [...]

A Linda Blair Moment – The Yume Project
April 21, 2010
Last week I had the privilege and pleasure of visiting the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University. I spoke to the graduate students about my design philosophy and process, I reviewed portfolios and saw project demonstrations. I met some amazing students and faculty. So, I thought I would share, this will be the first [...]

At the root of what we do is storytelling. Whether we are working on a dramatic film or theatrical piece or a trade show booth, museum exhibit, themed interior, news set or architainment, our set design must be part of advancing a story. Based on a script, story, program or creative brief, we conceive and [...]

A few good Vectorworks Downloads
February 28, 2010
For a long time we have had a section on the main site for downloads. The intent has always been to post some of our standard Vectorworks files like Default Stationery and Default Textures. Never got around to that. Until today. Nothing is ever perfect, especially files that need to continually evolve. So we hope [...]

65 Designers, no waiting
February 23, 2010
Cliff Kuang has an interesting post up at Fast Company on personality traits of designers. The Myers-Briggs personality test was taken by 65 designers, and skipping over the charts and graphs – you can see them if you click on the above link – here are the findings, as described by Kuang: According to the [...]

Faber-Castell; who knew?
November 30, 2009
At the Holiday Fountain Pen Hospital event we discovered Faber Castell. I always thought of them as wood pencil manufacturers, but we learned of their quality and acquired several. We now plan for more! I have been using the simple fountain pen with only a steel nib since we made the purchase. The mechanical pencil [...]

South Sea Blue
November 5, 2009
My fountain pen ink of choice, although I have been using Pelikan turquoise as the universal cartridges fit in my Faber-Castell fountain pen. The Waterman cartridges are nice, they hold twice the ink, but not all barrels can accommodate the size. For some time, when I first started to usea fountain pen, I would travel [...]

Collecting Pens
October 29, 2009
I (we actually) don’t collect pens per sé, we love fine writing instruments. We love to use them, we love to have them at meetings. They make a strong personal statement. But we don’t collect. We admire the many ‘collectibles’ but they tend to be too big, too fat and poorly balanced in the hand. [...]

My First Fountain Pen
October 25, 2009
I’ve used a fountain pen for most of my adult life. I recall shopping for the first. I wanted a Mont Blanc, they were popular and expensive. I wanted one. I went shopping and I test drove the Mont Blanc and just didn’t like it. At all. Now, at the time you couldn’t grab a [...]

September 15, 2009
So what did you do during your Summer vacation? Summer vacation, what Summer vacation? Much as I find Fall rejuvenating, I also find Summer vacation a misnomer. Happy Hour Friday: Coladarama
July 10, 2009
The sun’s out, its almost quitting time, so let’s go back to Cuba for a visit with one of my favorite summertime indulgences, a Pina Colada. Ok, ok, you’re all laughing now, I know it. There’s just so much to make fun of here. Yet another sickly sweet piece of crap rum drink that real [...]

and we do love Hotels as well
June 12, 2009
Typically Kimpton Hotels, but not this post. Those posts will follow, I’m sure. I want to retire and move into the Kimpton Hotel Palomar in Dupont Circle, Washington DC. I will be dining at Firefly (in the Kimpton Madera) around the corner. Dog friendly! These are definitely designer’s hotels. Today I am writing about the [...]

Pens, Pens, Pencils
April 15, 2009
We both love fine writing instruments. Fountain pens, pencils, ball point pens, roller balls, the works. And we love the Fountain Pen Hospital in New York City. Especially during their semi-annual Pen Expo. Great values and representatives of all the major manufacturers. While the expert staff has a huge knowledge base, the manufacturer reps bring another level of expertise.
