Photo retouching in the early part of the 20th century happened, but it wasn’t easy.
James Sharp spent six hours smoothing skin, removing spots, and erasing wrinkles. Sharp used a retoucher machine, which backlit and vibrated the original negative, allowing Sharp to physically smooth out the film using a pencil.
Amazing work all done by hand. Work that used to take an experienced, talented professional hours and hours to do is now so much more easily accomplished with Photoshop.
Of course, there’s an awful lot of very bad Photoshop out there, but that’s another blog post.
