Navy is the New Neutral – Design Trend Argle Bargle

Research, research and more research – it’s what designers do. I often wade into the murky, slimy, mostly silly world of interior design trends to see if I can find even a teeny-tiny bit of inspiration.

I started out today in a mature, positive place. I need to look at what interior designers are pushing with fresh eyes and an open mind.

These words and phrases are now banging around in my head.

Neutral base

Vintage! one of a kind pieces

Florals and Chintz

Navy is the new neutral

Return to tradition

Layering

Blues!

Dramatic impact from simplicity

Ok. I’m just not as good as I want to be. As these words filled my head, all attempts at openness, positive thoughts, fresh eyes etc. were gone. At this point, I was just trying to die a little less inside.

Anyway, in an attempt to not feel like the last few hours of my life were wasted, here’s a little snarkfest I put together from this morning’s notes.

"2014 will leave behind kitschy, purposeless accessories. " This year, Pottery Barn will only carry meaningful accessories, because now your dust collecting hoo ha NEEDS to have MEANING.

"Think outside the style box" Apparently, business buzzword bingo has collided with designer lingo to produce its bastard child, little uglystupid.

Blues! and distressed French Country. I'm feeling this like it's 1993. Oooh....a stack of books on the floor, how very clever.

"Bye to Beige" For a brief moment, I felt hopeful - somewhere out there was a bloggy decorator who gets it. Then, my sad eyes went to this: Are those tank tops as window treatment? Oooh matching pillows - but wait, isn't matchy matchy out? Is it wine o'clock yet?
