Romeo & Juliet
The overall production metaphor is one that KLAD created for the scenic production; Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers in an S&M club. The set is a simple obstacle course, with an elegant, minimalist machine that brings us to each of the key locations.
In addition to creating a harsh reality where neighbors would be just as glad to kill one another as pass on the street, the visual has been reinforced with industrial lighting, techno music and costumes that evoke the period while constructed of pvc, leather and latex.
In the words of the producing American Globe Theatre: William Shakespeare’s masterpiece never stops challenging us about love, violence and politics. In today’s world where our youth are used as pawns and suffer as “collateral damage”, the timeliness of this play has never been more acute. It is the power of love that ultimately heals, mends and brings peace.
