Farewell Market Diner

IMG_2840This is one other chip at the spirit of what was New York City.

The Market Dinner is a little bit of Googie (aka Populuxe) Architecture in Manhattan. Was will soon be more accurate. Located on the edge of the theatre district at 43rd and 11th, Market has been a great place for a meal or a drink since 1962. Soon it will be a vacant lot transformed into yet another luxury tower, part of a ghetto that has been developed in that area over the past few years.

The Garden Center next door is already vacating. Market will close Halloween. Hope we get there one more time.

Cities are all about change, but does the world need one more Applebee’s? That answer is a simple No. Apparently, diners all across the city are closing. Certainly, many small businesses are closing in NYC and elsewhere, giving way to national chains that don’t pay well, and offer the same blah merchandise everywhere. National chains can and do pay exorbitant rent, but what when that rent is the cost of a soul? All our souls.

Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York has been following the story and the trend.
